Area 12 · Act 3 · Crossing the Nullarbor

The Gawler Bread Basket

Adelaide plains north of the city — Gawler, Roseworthy and the market-garden flats: dead-level irrigated cropland, orderly roads, and the Roseworthy Agricultural College sitting in the middle like a prize.

DAY 118: SCIENCE HAS RULED THE EMU IMPOSSIBLE. THE EMU HAS NOT READ THE PAPER.

The history behind it

Roseworthy Agricultural College (est. 1883, Australia's first) really bred improved wheat strains; parody has its professors declare the emu 'agriculturally impossible' in a published paper the emus proceed to eat.

Outposts (4)

Take all of them and the area is yours. Retreat halfway through and the ones you already hold stay held.

  1. Roseworthy College Grounds

    Headquarters · Defence tier 3

The college HQ: a Sandbag Officer directing two Rifleman Lines from behind hay-bale fortifications, with experimental feed plots inside the capture zone — capture it and the food nodes are yours.

  2. The Model Farm Gun Post

Grain silo · Defence tier 3

Lewis Gun Post mounted on a prize-winning header harvester, sweeping the demonstration paddocks. Barbed Wire test-fencing funnels the swarm straight down its cone — route around via the irrigation ditches.

  3. Gawler River Truck Park

Supply depot · Defence tier 3

Supply truck park on the river flats: two Truck-Mounted Lewis guns that leapfrog between bursts. Bog tiles along the riverbank are the trap to lure them into.

  4. Two Wells Cavalry Yard

Homestead garrison · Defence tier 2

Remount yard for a 4-rider Cavalry Patrol that charges down the dead-straight plains roads. Spooked horses eject riders into the capture zone, obligingly becoming Riflemen.
