Area 09 · Act 2 · The Goldfields Push

The Golden Mile

Kalgoorlie–Boulder, WA — headframes, mullock heaps, and the richest square mile of gold-bearing dirt on earth; a maze of poppet heads, tramways, and pub-lined wide streets.

DAY 58: THE EMUS SEIZE THE GOLDEN MILE. GOLD IGNORED; SCRAP METAL TAKEN. ECONOMISTS BAFFLED.

The history behind it

Kalgoorlie's miners famously ignored every crisis that didn't affect beer supply. Here the army has fortified the mine heads to 'deny the enemy strategic scrap metal' — the first official admission that the emus are collecting it. The miners are on strike about something unrelated and refuse to assist either side.

Outposts (4)

Take all of them and the area is yours. Retreat halfway through and the ones you already hold stay held.

  1. Ivanhoe Headframe

Gun post · Defence tier 3

A Lewis Gun Post mounted halfway up a poppet head with a Searchlight Tower alongside — the mine works at night. Rock-throw the lamp for the satisfying glass sound, then rush the reload.

  2. Boulder Block Motor Pool

Supply depot · Defence tier 4

Two Truck-Mounted Lewises and a fat pile of tyres, radiators, and Scrap. An Armoured Car idles here on patrol — lure it into the mullock slurry (bog tiles) or come back with rocks.

  3. Hannan Street HQ

    Headquarters · Defence tier 4

The requisitioned Palace Hotel. Sandbag Officer on the balcony, Rifleman Lines behind the veranda posts, Barbed Wire across the famously wide street — wide enough, it turns out, for a very wide wedge of emus.

  4. Tram Powerhouse

Gun post · Defence tier 2

Small but nasty: a Lewis Gun Post covering the tramway cutting that is the only low-ground route between the other outposts. Take it early or eat the cone every crossing.
